Gwenann ReidI am interested in the magic I observe in the moments of every day – a falling leaf, a cloud, a swelling wave, a reflection, a pattern in the bark of a tree. I attempt to capture the sublime beauty in what surrounds me in my paintings. I try to truly see and to transform what I see and feel into my own visual language in my paintings. This visual language is used to interpret both explorations of landscapes and organic abstract work. One method looks outward to what surrounds me; the other shifts inward and is more intuitive even if based on exterior aspects of nature. Both my representational and abstract art share common elements and symbols as part of the alphabet of my own visual language. Some of these elements tend to be rounded, sensual shapes that recur with and without plan. I wrestle with finding the appropriate balance in my paintings between the freedom of intuitive artistic expression and the necessary discipline in use of the formal elements of composition. It is vitally important to me to continue to grow as an artist. This means to continuously explore, experiment, study art history, seek out collaboration with other artists, and to not be bound by one particular style or approach, but to keep building upon what I know and learn. |
