Encouraging exploration and dialogue in the visual arts

Nancy Lee Schulz

One of the first babies born to G.I.s at Yale University, Nancy Lee first made a name for herself by streaking the Yale football team because she didn't want a bath. Her family lived in a Quonset Hut off the polo field where the football team practiced.

The oldest of 5 children, she grew up in Fairfield CT where she was part of every drama production at her schools. She started as the leader of the rats in the Pied Piper of Hamlin in first grade. She grabbed the spotlight in her senior year as Miss Fairfield. So much for notoriety.

Nancy married at 18, had her first child at 20, divorced at 23 and lived the life of a single parent in Newtown CT. She worked at Fairfield Hills Mental Hospital as a Psychiatric Aide for a couple years.

She went back to school at Goddard College using their External Degree Program so that she could stay with her daughter while getting her degree. She got her teaching certificate and worked as a long-term sub in Newtown's elementary schools. She specialized in Music, Art and first grade.

Failing to get a teaching position she went into industry and worked at making sutures-piecework. She moved into Customer Service but it didn't stick. She started her business Wife:Savers Inc. and worked at that for five years.

In 1985 Nancy's house burned down. Three months later she got pregnant. It was "Change your life" time. She went back to school to get her Masters then her Doctorate in Psychology. She went to California Coast University (snail mail) so that she could be with her young son and husband.

Upon graduation Nancy became a Life Coach. Her goal is to help people discover the joy of who they are. She says: "Life is perfect here and now, so be your perfect self. Share the gifts you came to give. That’s how Joy is made!"

She began using Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way as a path to unloosing creativity. This led to serious daily writing and the completion of a lifelong dream-a book. Called DIRT RICH, the book is about Living in an Affluent Neighborhood on No Money. True-life adventures: having the "dirt" on how to be rich when money is not an option.

She started painting using Bob Ross' techniques on TV. Friends steered her to Alex Shundi and his fruitful class in 1992. "Alex never made fun of my happy little clouds," declares Nancy. "He just asked where I wanted to go and still asks what do I want to do... he’s a fabulous teacher."

Dr. Schulz works as a life coach in Newtown. She's writing every day and painting, as you see.
